Faster Playing Guitar Neck

How to make your guitar neck play faster?

Send your neck to us at Haywire Custom Shop.  On Urethane and polyester finishes sometimes the sweat from your hand will slow you down. Even on some Lacquer finishes with a high shine this can occur.  Water between your hand and a high gloss finish can “grab” and suddenly stop you. It can be very irritating to be on your way to a great riff then get stopped!  So, what do you do?  Send it to us here at the shop. We will “Satinize” your finish so the grab from your hand sweat will not be nearly as noticeable. Contrary to some thinking, a matte or satin finish on a neck will feel and play much faster. It will allow for your hands to travel up and down the neck unimpeded. When the gloss is knocked off of the finish the stickiness will disappear.

Dirt on necks will slow down playing on a guitar neck

Some general housekeeping on your guitar will help it play faster.  Dirt combined with sweat can make it gummy. You can rub it out to make it more slippery and not as gummy and slow. Some lemon juice and salt will work. Mineral spirits will clean a neck too.Keep your instrument clean for better playing.

Action on the back of your guitar neck

Guitar players speak about the “neck action” often.  Action is referred to as: “the height of the strings above the fret board or distance from the top of the frets . It is also used to describe the general ease, feel and ability of a guitar to play effortlessly. However, these terms and descriptions refer to the front of a guitar neck. Rarely does anyone speak about the “action on the back of the neck”.  This kind of action is just as important as the action on the neck front on a guitar. Why? Well an often heard complaint is my neck is slowing me down. If the action solutions have been addressed on the top of or front of your guitar neck then what’s left?  Of course-the back!  That’s where we come in.  The Haywire Custom shop will address all concerns you have EVERYWHERE on your guitar. The neck profile finish is no exception.  So, let’s get you playing your guitar faster.

The relationship of neck back finish to playing speed

A satin finish is between a high shine and matte finish (no sheen).  Replacing the sheen is a great way to speed up the feel and action on the back of your guitar neck. Your fingers act like suction cups on a high sheen finish. Like frogs feet your fingers are more likely to stick on a glossy surface. Frogs prefer glassy and shiny surfaces such as windows. They can stick like glue on them. They’ll hang there for long periods of time. However they rarely stick to a non-shiny or matte surface. If they’re smart enough to know the difference-shouldn’t we be? The same principle applies to guitar necks. If you want a faster neck-with no sticking, then don’t add a sheen to the surface. Let us speed up the action on the front and back of your guitar neck.

When you have a neck that you just love but it’s a bit too slow, we’ll fix it for you

“Just $55.00 plus return shipping back to you will get guitar neck faster more comfortable for you.
Best of all, no waiting. We work on the neck as soon as it gets here. the turn around time is 2 days or less from when we receive it”.

Replacement Guitar Neck

Haywire Custom Shop Replacement Guitar Neck Option- Custom Guitar Neck Shapes

In some cases, a replacement guitar neck is preferable to replacing the entire guitar. First of all, cracking finishes, worn frets and warping fret boards are common ailments of guitar necks. Therefore, replacing a bolt-on guitar neck is often a considerably less expensive option than repairing the damage or replacing the whole guitar.

Custom Guitar Neck Shapes For You

Most of all,  when the time comes, Haywire Custom Shop can replace your neck for you.  Because, one solution, guitar neck replacement may solve your guitar neck issues.  You Can Choose from Super Wide and Fat Guitar Necks to Thin and Slim!  Consequently, it may be the best decision you make on your guitar.  Most of all, finding your perfect neck can be almost life-changing for a pro guitar player.  While, looking for a positive change in playing this is it.

Your Replacement Guitar Neck -We will do the following:

    • In performing a 4-axis alignment of the guitar neck your new guitar neck will be checked and adjusted to be true and straight to ensure proper alignment on all 4 axis.  This step almost always ensures proper action and allows for more accurate and easier guitar tuning and playing.  A full set-up will then be performed in the following steps.

    • We level and polish the frets to insure that all of the guitar frets are level, eliminating any possibility of fret buzz due to unevenness.

  • Next, we radius the guitar strings.  Since, most guitar necks have a curved contour over the top of the neck called the radius. We adjust the strings to make sure the height of each string. They perfectly follow the contour of your guitar neck.  Because, once we determine the contour and then we set the radius of the guitar strings. Next, it’s time to adjust the overall height of the strings from the top of the frets to the bottom of the guitar strings accurately.

  • Help you decide on the best materials, neck profile for your technique, comfortable frets, finish and nut for your style. We can use your existing tuners or replace and upgrade them as necessary.

    • In addition, we can re-check the overall guitar string height and the action all while maintaining the radius just created.  The truss rod adjustment is then able to be made here.  The strings will be parallel all the way down the fret board and neck straight.

  • Finally, we set the guitar intonation.  This step is done twice.  The intonation is set two times with a 24 hour “seat-in” period in between to allow the guitar to properly re-seat and settle in with the new adjustments.

Guitar Neck Shaping

Guitar Neck Shaping and Carving will improve the feel and action of a guitar. If done properly a player will benefit from a slimmer thinner neck. Guitarists with smaller hands will especially feel a difference in the neck thickness. In turn, this will facilitate their playing style and speed. Neck shaping is one of the best custom guitar modifications a player can do for themselves if necks are too thick.

carving and shaping a guitar neck

Most players want their guitar neck to be shaped symmetrically all the way down. I used to use a digital caliper gauge to check for symmetry and thickness.  After several years I have gotten to the point where I could feel if it was the shape  I was seeking.  Running my hand across the surface will give me a good idea how close I am to final shaping.  As far as thickness,  the thickness of the neck to be what the player specifies.  After all, I'm not doing the necks for me but for the owner of the guitar.

The key is to help players all over the spectrum not simply average players

For example if he wants the neck a standard thin, then the first fret to be about 0.800″ and at the 12th fret about 0.92″ unless the customer specifies something else. These dimensions seem to be comfortable to most average players. The key is to help players all over the spectrum not simply average players.

final guitar neck shaping measurements

Once I get close to the final size the customer needs the calipers come out more frequently.  When the guitar neck is carved and shaped to where it needs to be I'll sand, smooth and add a finish to protect it. If it's a neck someone has brought in, then I'll match the finish to color and style.  It's perfect if it looks like nothing has been done to it. My feeling is the less invasive the better. Sometimes the entire neck has to be reshaped for a player so they can play more comfortably. In the end, that why we do guitar neck shaping, for the players.

Fingerboard Radius

image Fingerboard Radius
The fingerboard, or playing surface of your guitar neck, is usually curved or radiused across its width. The purpose of this radius is to accommodate the natural ergonomic shape of your fingers when they are in playing position. Comfort is certainly a major factor in selecting a fingerboard radius but it is not the only factor. Musical Style... the fingerboard radius must also allow you to play the style of music you prefer.

Why is fingerboard radius important?

The fingerboard radius, the curve or arc across the top of your guitar neck varies from neck to neck.  It's easy to spot on most electric guitar and bass fingerboards. Almost none of them are flat.  Most guitar and bass necks have a light curvature across their width. The smaller the radius, then the more curved the top of the  radius will be. Hence, a larger the radius the flatter the top of the board is.  Over the years the most common ones are: smaller vintage-style 7.25″ radius, 12" and the modern 9.5" . These are all readily available.

New age fingerboard neck radius choices

Today there are lots of choices from 7.5" all the way up to 20" radius boards. These will accommodate and make most any player happy. A guitar player today will have a lot of custom guitar neck choices to fit his style and comfort.  If not the there are lots of choices in between. For example, compound-radius fingerboard is a fairly new option that some guitarists find attractive.  The fingerboard is more rounded near the 1st fret area and then  flattens out closer to the 12fth fret area. So almost any choice is available to a guitar player today. Haywire Custom guitars offers any fingerboard radius choice that a guitar player needs to be comfortable and play like he wants to play.

Haywire Custom guitars offers any radius choice

There is no right or wrong choice for players. Whatever suits a players comfort level, their personal preferences are all available from us here at haywire Custom Shop. It's important that a guitar player knows he has a choice.
