Back Up Guitar

Back Up Guitar

Successful musicians consistently do things that unsuccessful musicians are unable, or unwilling to do. And as a Pro musician, it is your responsibility to learn your instrument. It’s your main work tool. Learn how it works, learn how to adjust and set it up for maximum benefit to you, the player. The learning just begins there. A player also needs to learn the music, the styles and thoroughly know the content and repertoire. The successful guitar player knows how to get along with the other members in the band. Most importantly, they also have a backup guitar in case of emergency. Haywire Custom Guitars knows how important your job is. We can duplicate your guitar in our Custom Shop so you’ll always have a backup guitar!
When you work hard on computer files don’t you back them up? Of course. You may need them in an emergency if the computer fails. Correct? You keep them with you on a flash drive or in a cloud. You do this because you are a Pro and want to be seen as a Pro and taken seriously. As well when you have a job to do you need to be prepared to complete the job no matter what may occur. That is why you are successful.

Are you a successful guitar player?

What are you willing to do? A lot of non-pro players will do a job on the fly and use what tools they have on hand to complete it. Pro players, on the other hand, plan for success. When they approach a job, they do it to succeed. That’s another reason they are called pros.

You need a backup guitar

If you are a pro guitar player and have jobs to do and want to be successful then you must be prepared no matter what happens. More importantly, you need a backup guitar. If your instrument fails then you’ll need a duplicate so your job performance will not suffer and you’ll continue to be recognized as a pro player.

Are you being taken seriously as a guitarist?

Get serious about your job. If you plan on a long career in the music business then plan now to eliminate failure. At Haywire Custom Shop we work to build duplicate guitars for serious players who plan for success. We are musicians working for musicians. Let us work for you.

Haywire Shredneck Custom Guitar

The Haywire Shredneck Custom is a pickers delight thanks to a fast neck that let's you bend your way from here to Nashville. In 1982, Haywire was on the forefront with some of the first prototype models for this versatile design.

This guitar takes the traditional single cutaway design with the Humbucker Tele bridge, and combines it with the three pickup configuration found on traditional double cutaway solid body guitars, giving you the most distinctive sounds of both guitars in one fine instrument.

The pickup combination of the Lollar Imperial Low Wind in the bridge, Duncan Mini-Humbucker at the neck, and Lollar Vinatge Blond in the middle gives you everything from that unmistakable country twang to great rock sounds from Hendrix to Clapton, and everything in between. Any other pickups made in the USA are available as option on this guitar.

The following combinations are available on the 5 way switch: Bridge pickup only, bridge and center pickup, center pickup only, center and neck pickup, and neck pickup only. Haywire adds our exclusive:

Haywire SubSound-2 (Seven Sound Switch) option

to this guitar, giving you the two additional combinations of the neck and bridge pickup together or all three pickups together.

Haywire also includes the Haywire Treble Bleed Circuit, which allows your high frequencies to shine through at lower volume settings.

Guitar Muse Article About Haywire Custom Shop

Over at Haywire Custom Guitars they have been (among other things) marrying different guitars for quite some time now. The results of this matrimony have been striking to say the least, both visually and in the way they sound.
Rick Mariner – from Haywire Custom Guitars, is always talking to his customers, and that is exactly how this story begins. His clients in Nashville were constantly switching between Double Cutaways and Single Cutaways, often several times during the course of one gig – and they became interested to know if he could produce a guitar that could produce the sounds of both.
That’s when Rick First Designed the Haywire Signature Guitars - The Nashville Players #1.

The Outcaster

The Haywire Signature Guitars - The Nashville Players #1
is a different animal – but it’s got a Classic bridge and bridge pickup installed. One difference right here is that the bridge is a six saddle bridge, which improves sustain over the 3 saddle types we’re used to seeing on similar guitars. Obviously, six saddles also provide you better control over your intonation.
Since this is a custom shop guitar – you have many more options as well. The Haywire Signature Guitars - The Nashville Players #1 can accommodate either a 25-1/2" or Gibson scale neck – which gives you more options on the overall feel as well as the headstock.
You have the choice of Alnico or Active EMG pickups as well.
This thing sounds really great, guys – we’ll show you some video of it in a minute.

Haywire Outcaster GuitarThe Outcaster

Up next we’ve got the Outcaster .One of the newest additions to the Haywire line, the Outcaster offers all of the options of the Stratotelia, like the choice of Gibson or 25-1/2" scale and active EMG pickups – but Haywire has added the option for a two or six point tremolo bridge on this one for those of us who like a little bending capability.
The Outcaster offers even more options – and with the option for the tremolo bridge, it’s one step closer to the perfect marriage of two classic guitars.

Haywire Custom Guitars

We’ve known Rick over at Haywire for quite some time, and we’ve written a few articles on him and his work over the past couple of years. Haywire is a custom shop – so you’re going to get that quality and attention to detail that you expect from a custom job – but at a price that I think pretty much demolishes the competition.
Another thing you’re going to get is a beautiful guitar that people will notice. One thing I love to do is look through Haywire’s image gallery every now and then just for the breathtaking “wow” factor. From the stunning looks to the amazing sound and playability – Haywire really makes sure they provide the whole package to their customers.

As promised – here’s the video. Check out how great this guitar sounds!

A Custom Dream built for the Blues

Rick and Haywire Custom Guitars went WAY beyond my expectations for a custom guitar. The Bluescaster (A custom Fender American Standard with SRV pickups) jumped right off the Ebay page and screamed “LOOK AT ME!” I mean, how could I resist a wood-grain Fender built for the blues? That’s like walking down a beach full of topless Playmates without stopping to say “how you doin?” I contacted Rick and asked if he’d be willing to make some aesthetic changes to further “unique-ify” the guitar. Not only was he more than happy to oblige, but also made all of the alterations quickly and without any extra charge. He kept me up to date with constant pictures and emails through every step of the process. He treated me the way that every customer wants to be treated. If you want a unique, great-looking, great-sounding guitar for an unbeatable price---you need look no further than Rick Mariner and Haywire Custom Guitars.

Superb work, simply top drawer

I sent my Warmoth '59 Roundback in to Rick for him to modify. It was a little too large for my hands. After consulting with Rick we agreed that the best choice would be to modify the '59 Roundback to shape closer to a Warmoth/Peavey Wolgang contour. The turnaround was lightning speed. In a single day, Rick reshaped the neck, dressed the edges of the frets, resealed the neck, and reset the truss rod adjustments. All I had to do when I got back the neck was to screw in the 4 neck screws.I could not possibly be more pleased with the results. The neck is absolutely perfect for me, and I appreciate the expertise and professionalism courtesy this fine craftsman.Daryl Lazarescu, Winnipeg Canada

The Very Best

Mr. Rick Mariner built a Haywire 335 Strat for me and it's the very best guitar I have ever owned. I had two Gibsons,ES175 and the ES350 and this 335 Strat plays better. I've been playing for 62 years, this guitar is most outstanding.

10/10 for HAYWIRE

I recently bought a used modified stratocaster from Haywire Custom Guitars. The only problem was that I couldn't see how it had been used.
It arrived looking factory fresh and it is stunning.
It has a sunburst gloss finish medium light alder body and a vintage maple '59 roundback neck. Rick Mariner is very precise in describing his guitars, but that does not prepare you for how beautifull his instruments sound, look and feel.
He is obviously passionate about his work, and wants his customers to be completely satisfied with their purchase.
Rick's attention to detail, with his guitars, his customers needs and communication is second to none.
That's why I bought another Haywire Custom Guitar just a few weeks after buying the first.
I strongly recommend Haywire Custom Guitars to anyone thinking of buying a guitar.
All the best Rick,
I hope your business goes great, you really deserve it.

I have only one word to say...... INCREDIBLE!

Hi Rick,
I received the guitar today and I have only one word to say...... INCREDIBLE!
This thing plays as good if not better than my Les Paul and sounds better too which is no surprise as it always had better tone than any of my guitars. Thanks for the attention to detail on the neck and the finish. I would honor being any kind of reference for you and I will certainly pass your name around for those who are in need of your services.
Thanks for the T-Shirt as well.
I will be in touch with you on future setups and a tele build
Thank You,
Rich Williamson

Perfect 10

What a beautiful guitar. After unpacking it, I did a quick tune up and it was ready to go - the setup was perfect. Spent several hours playing it and basically just having fun with this excellent guitar. The Warmoth neck is fantastic.
I spent a lot of time researching Strats to find the right one for my collection, and now feel very lucky to have found Haywire Guitars and Rick Mariner. The finish on the body is stunning, and the workmanship on every part of the guitar is outstanding. Just as important for me is the customer service. I spent quite a bit of time talking to Rick via phone on two separate occasions, both about the guitar I was interested in and generally chatting about guitars. I felt as though we had been friends for years. He answered all of my questions and offered great information about guitar specifics. Would highly recommend Haywire Custom Guitars to anyone looking for the highest quality in a guitar - 100%.

Great experience with Haywire

Not too long ago, I bought a custom Tele from Haywire. It began as Haywire's "Tele Tremelo." I asked for several modifications, including a different pick-up and a different neck. I had a really excellent experience working with Rick Mariner, who is a really good communicator and a very reliable businessman. I would send him an e-mail, and he'd be back to me very quickly--with clear and complete answers about everything. The guitar is great--just what I was wanting. I recommend Haywire and Rick very highly.

Haywire 335 Strat

Mr. Rick Mariner built a guitar for me. He calls it The Haywire335 Strat.Well, it turns out to be the very best guitar I have ever owned. The Gibson ES350 and the ES175 I owned are very good guitars and this Haywire 335 Strat feels and plays better. I am amazed. Have played guitar for 62 years(10 of those years professionally) and this guitar is the most outstanding of them all. Thank you Rick Mariner.

Why Radius Polepieces On Guitar Pickups?

image Haywire Custom Guitars F-335 Semi Hollw guitar with pole piece under each string

Haywire Signature Guitars

The F-335 Custom

]
Radius Pole Pieces On Guitar Pickups
Because, they're adjustable for a reason. Take advantage of it. It's much better to radius each guitar pickup pole piece in your guitar pickups than leave them flat if they're adjustable. Why is this done? There are several reasons for doing this. Think of the poles as an EQ.  Why do you use an EQ?  Think about it for a while. First, guitars are almost never set up when sent from the factory to the music store.

Guitars Are Almost Never Set Up When Sent From The Factory To The Music Store

A complete set up is part of the process performed in a good custom guitar shop. In order to complete the set up radius each adjustable pole piece. Second, each guitar neck on an electric guitar has a radius. In a proper set up the strings will have the same radius as the neck. Where sound and frequencies are an important issue to the player we'll use guitar pickups with adjustable pole pieces. The third and most important reason is that if the strings and neck have a radius and so should the guitars pickups to reproduce accurate tone.
Guitar sound consistency is important in setup as well as playing. Just as it is necessary to keep the same distance from the fret to the bottom of the string, it is just as important to maintain an equal distance from the string to the top of each pole piece. Why? Equal distance of strings to pickups gives equal volume and therefore a more consistent volume level for each note played. The results are more even frequencies, more consistent sound, better tone, less unwanted feedback, even volume, more responsive pick up control, better sustain and more clarity in the overall sound.

Guitar Pickup Poles Must Follow The Neck Radius Just The Same As The Strings

All that's needed to accomplish this is a set of  guitar pick ups that are adjustable. How can you tell? A visual inspection will tell you instantly if they are. A good example is a typical humbucker pick up. Let's take the one that Seth Lover first introduced. Seth's most famous humbucker design (U.S. Patent 2,896,491) was the P.A.F. (Patent Applied For) designed while he worked at the Gibson guitar manufacturing site in 1955. This pickup was used in a wide range of Gibson guitars, most notably the Les Paul guitar model. If you notice and look closely- you'll see that the humbucker is adjustable.

The Humbucker Has Adjustable Pole Pieces

Most Humbuckers have six poles, therefore you'll adjust each one. You can see there are six pole pieces visible through the metal cover. One under each guitar string. They have slotted tops for a screwdriver blade. The guitar pole piece is actually a long machine screw. There is one per string on a single coil pickup. Two per string on a humbucker pickup. When the screws are turned clockwise they travel away from the strings.  As a result, if turned counter-clockwise they will rise closer to the strings. This is most noteworthy because the neck has a radius. Therefore the poles must follow that radius the same as the strings.

Adjusting Pole Pieces

All that is necessary is to adjust the guitar pickup pole piece screws so that the are about 1/8 inch from the bottom of each string. In a good set up this is the last step performed. You'll find the guitar sound will be enhanced from this small detail that makes a big difference to a discerning player.
