Guitar Neck shaving in the Haywire Custom Guitars-Custom Shop


Sometimes adding a new neck can be the better, faster, safer but not necessarily a cheaper option. A guitar neck shave?

We wouldn’t recommend doing it yourself, however if you have a neck that is too large for your hands, clumsy and uncomfortable for you then……….a guitar neck shave may be a better option for YOU.  It’s not a “one size fits all” world but most manufacturers only aim for the “average” players hands-not yours. Jimmy Page had the neck shaved on his 1960 Les Paul.  Jimmy’s Les Paul was shaved to a slim taper.  Sure the nut width may be different on some guitar models from either 1-5/8 to  1-11/16 on electric guitars. Acoustic guitars will sometimes have a wider nut width on the upper wider end such as 1-11/16 to 1-3/4 then to 1-7/8 inches on some models. The necks are generally the same.

Let’s get back to YOU and your hands. If changing the nut width doesn’t do it for you then consider a guitar neck shave. In the realm of professionals it’s and easy job done regularly. With the high cost of replacement necks in the neighborhood of around $250 ( for a used one) to $500 for a new one maybe the one you have just needs a tweak?  What do you think? The cost of a neck shave is very inexpensive compared to a new neck purchase. Consider the benefits. First, you can ship your guitar or just the neck to us, it will arrive in a day or two. We will work on it the day it arrives. The neck will be shaved to whatever specs you request. We always take measurements at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th 9th and 12th frets upon arrival. Your neck is then shaved to the specs desired. We’ll check the neck for any problems such as twisting and over or under bow as well as fret dressing on the ends if required.

Guitar Neck Reshaping: What is Your Preference, A Thin Neck or Thick Neck ?

Neck thickness should be chosen for what best fits your hands, not the “tone” it has.  Furthermore, that should be the major consideration in the choice of your new neck. The timbre of a fat neck is noticeable. However, most of the tone comes from your playing technique-not the wood.
On an electric guitar tones are affected by everything from the pickups and amplification to pedals, pickups to speaker enclosures.

However, comfort  does affect your playing ability and technique which is what matters most in finding and maintaining your tone. Start with finding a neck that makes playing a joy and enhances your technique in a way that allows you to play your best, then:

However, other factors to consider are pickups, effects, speaker enclosures, etc.
When we do guitar neck shaving, it’s intended for musicians who are working and need a good tool so it will play better. A guitarist’s tool is not intended to be entered into a beauty contest. If your neck thickness is an impediment to your playing, then guitar neck shaving is the right decision for you. Neck shaving is to help you be more comfortable with your guitar. A finish is applied simply to prevent moisture from absorbing into the neck wood. If you are a guitar collector, neck shaving will not improve the resale value of your instrument. The best way to communicate what you need is to either work with specs from your existing neck or send a neck along with the one you’d like shaved. Ideally the sample neck you send should be what you’d liked duplicated on the neck to be shaved. We can duplicate anything.   If you want to work from your existing neck then move the strings and take thickness measurements with a digital caliper. We do this every time a neck comes in to the shop. Take the sample thicknesses from-1st fret   3rd     5th     7th      9th     12fth frets. From those measurements we’ll be able to determine how much you need removed to make it a better playing neck for you. Similarly, we use those thickness numbers to work from.

In the same way, we can get the reduction as close as possible within a few thousandths of what you need removed.

Guitar Neck Shaping

Guitar Neck Shaping and Carving will improve the feel and action of a guitar. If done properly a player will benefit from a slimmer thinner neck. Guitarists with smaller hands will especially feel a difference in the neck thickness. In turn, this will facilitate their playing style and speed. Neck shaping is one of the best custom guitar modifications a player can do for themselves if necks are too thick.

Most players want their guitar neck to be shaped symmetrically all the way down. I used to use a digital caliper gauge to check for symmetry and thickness.  After several years I have gotten to the point where I could feel if it was the shape  I was seeking.  Running my hand across the surface will give me a good idea how close I am to final shaping.  As far as thickness,  the thickness of the neck to be what the player specifies.  After all, I'm not doing the necks for me but for the owner of the guitar.

The key is to help players all over the spectrum not simply average players

For example if he wants the neck a standard thin, then the first fret to be about 0.800″ and at the 12th fret about 0.92″ unless the customer specifies something else. These dimensions seem to be comfortable to most average players. The key is to help players all over the spectrum not simply average players.

Once I get close to the final size the customer needs the calipers come out more frequently.  When the guitar neck is carved and shaped to where it needs to be I'll sand, smooth and add a finish to protect it. If it's a neck someone has brought in, then I'll match the finish to color and style.  It's perfect if it looks like nothing has been done to it. My feeling is the less invasive the better. Sometimes the entire neck has to be reshaped for a player so they can play more comfortably. In the end, that why we do guitar neck shaping, for the players.
