Guitar Neck Reshaping: What is Your Preference, A Thin Neck or Thick Neck ?

Neck thickness should be chosen for what best fits your hands, not the “tone” it has.  Furthermore, that should be the major consideration in the choice of your new neck. The timbre of a fat neck is noticeable. However, most of the tone comes from your playing technique-not the wood.
On an electric guitar tones are affected by everything from the pickups and amplification to pedals, pickups to speaker enclosures.

Guitar Neck Shaving Is A Viable Option For Maximum Comfort

In a live playing situation “wood tones”  in an electric guitar will become even less noticeable.  Let’s say everything is equal and the guitar is perfectly in tune and intoned.  The overall sound of your guitar may be noticeably affected by a fatter/ thicker neck but generally only when you are playing without the guitar plugged in to an amp. Most of all, high gain electric guitar tone is very much dependent on a players technique and comfort with his instrument and not the thickness of a neck. Therefore, guitar neck shaving is a viable option for comfort.
Neck tone is an issue that no empirical evidence has ever put to rest. However, comfort  does affect your playing ability and technique which is what matters most in finding and maintaining your tone. Start with finding a neck that makes playing a joy and enhances your technique in a way that allows you to play your best, then:

Find the best amp that suits your ear for the tone you like. 

However, other factors to consider are pickups, effects, speaker enclosures, etc.
When we do guitar neck shaving, it’s intended for musicians who are working and need a good tool so it will play better. A guitarist’s tool is not intended to be entered into a beauty contest. If your neck thickness is an impediment to your playing, then guitar neck shaving is the right decision for you. Neck shaving is to help you be more comfortable with your guitar. The best way to communicate what you need is to either work with specs from your existing neck or send a neck along with the one you’d like shaved. Ideally the sample neck you send should be what you’d liked duplicated on the neck to be shaved. We can duplicate anything.   If you want to work from your existing neck then move the strings and take thickness measurements with a digital caliper. We do this every time a neck comes in to the shop. Take the sample thicknesses from-1st fret   3rd     5th     7th      9th     12fth frets. From those measurements we’ll be able to determine how much you need removed to make it a better playing neck for you. Similarly, we use those thickness numbers to work from.

In the same way, we can get the reduction as close as possible within a few thousandths of what you need removed.

Superficial surface finish cracks are prone to all guitars. Importantly, more in used guitars.
Strats tend to crack the paint or finish surface in that exact same spot where the neck meets the body. Used guitars are especially more prone as they have been handled more.
If you bought a guitars that was not listed as Mint, NEW or Perfect
then it’s a used guitar. Ordinary wear and tear and surface cracks are to be expected sometimes, so clearly a surface crack in the body where the neck meets the pocket is a non-issue. Equally important, if a used guitar plays well and sounds good and is in excellent playing condition
why worry?

The “Real Value” of used guitars

Remember-most used guitars aren’t beauty pageant entries, just good possibilities as great playing guitars for you.
You need to ask yourself? Did I buy this guitar to play it or look at it?
When you said nothing about how well it plays but just how it looks it’s not the guitar with a problem.
The real value of a “used guitar” is that it allows a player to have some experience with a higher end instrument without the higher cost.
I really hope as a serious player you try it to determine if it plays excellently.
Most guitar players are Divas, sure I get it. They are superficial and tend to choose instruments as they would a girl friend.
Don’t do that. It’s a tool. If you buy a dull tool-then don’t complain…sharpen it!

To an untrained eye-sometimes what may look like an issue is usually not an issue at all.
When paint is stripped from a used guitar body there will be a space where the excessive amounts of paint used to be.
As a guitar builder-I want some space for my guitar necks to align properly. That is a very important part of setup later on.

Not every neck fits perfectly tight

When adding a neck to a guitar body there are 4 axis which need to be perfectly positioned. As follows: right, left
and forward and backward neck alignment. If the neck is perfectly aligned on all of those axis-it will play properly.
When buying a used or new guitar that is what to look for.
Look at the margin space on each side between the neck and strings.
Ideally you should see the same amount of neck space from each of the “E” strings to the side of the neck-all the way down.
That will give an indication of the proper alignment to right and left axis. Further, the strings will ride just over top of each pole piece on each pickup. That is another indication alignment is correct.
Not every guitar neck fits perfectly tight with every body. It doesn’t need to.
It just needs to align and play well.

What Is Guitar Intonation And Why Is It Important?

An obvious question?  Yes!  Worth talking about?  Absolutely!

Intonation is the accuracy in which an electric guitar or bass can produce a fretted note and the most important issue with any instrument.  Setting the intonation on a guitar is the act of adjusting the length of the strings (by moving the bridge saddles) to compensate for the thickness of the string and the stretching of a string due to pushing it down to the fret board to produce a note. For our purposes here I will focus only on electric instruments for now.

To adjust the intonation of your guitar or bass guitar, you move the bridge saddles toward or away from the fret board until the 12th fret note and its harmonic are equal in pitch to the same open-string note, which are exactly one octave apart. Accurate intonation is critical to pitch quality.  Pitch quality is essential to "in tune"  playing.

Poor pitch quality = "out of tune" notes which in turn = poor musical presentation.  Wouldn't you want to present your musical talents in the best way possible?  Of course, you do.

Now, it is not necessary for a guitar player to know this at all.  It is essential however that the guitar possess this quality and maintain as close to perfect intonation as possible.  Buying on looks alone can be very disappointing.  If however, you like an instrument for the looks but realize that you will need to have it worked on to get it playable then that is fine.  It's best to speak to a Luthier or guitar builder previous to any purchase.  It's like to asking a mechanic which car he would recommend before you walk into the show room to select one. You can benefit from his first hand knowledge and experience and not have to go it alone.  After all the mechanic knows which cars  breakdown.

How does the tone capacitor value affect the sound of the guitar?

How does the tone capacitor value affect the sound of the guitar?

Most guitars and basses with passive pickups use between .01 and .1 MFD (Microfarad) tone capacitors with .02 (or .022) and .05 (or .047) being the most common choices. The capacitor and tone pot are wired together to provide a variable low pass filter. This means when the filter is engaged (tone pot is turned) only the low frequencies pass to the output jack and the high frequencies are grounded out (cut) In this application, the capacitor value determines the "cutoff frequency" of the filter and the position of the tone pot determines how much the highs (everything above the cutoff frequency) will be reduced. The rule is: Larger capacitors will have lower cutoff frequency and sound darker in the bass setting because a wider range of frequencies is being reduced. Smaller capacitors will have a higher cutoff frequency and sound brighter in the bass setting because only the ultra high frequencies are cut. For this reason, dark sounding guitars like Les Pauls with humbuckers typically use .02MFD (or .022MFD) capacitors to cut off less of the highs and guitars like Strats and Teles with single coils typically use .05 MFD capacitors to allow more treble to be rolled off.

The capacitor value however, only affects the sound when the tone control is being used (pot in the bass setting) The tone capacitor value will have little to no effect on the sound when the tone pot is in the treble setting.

What is the difference between 250K & 500K guitar pots?

Either 250K or 500K pots can be used with any passive pickups however the pot values will affect tone slightly. The rule is: Using higher value pots (500K) will give the guitar a brighter sound and lower value pots (250K) will give the guitar a slightly warmer bassier sound. This is because higher value pots put less of a load on the pickups which prevents treble frequencies from "bleeding" to ground through the pot and being  lost. For this reason, guitars with humbuckers like Les Pauls use 500K pots to retain more highs for a slightly brighter tone and guitars with single coils like Stratocasters and Telecasters use 250K pots to add some warmth by slightly reducing the highs. You can also fine tune the sound by changing the pot values regardless of what pot value the guitar originally had.

What is a No Load guitar tone control and how does it work?

The No Load Pot is used on some Fender USA Strats, Teles and Fender basses and is wired like a standard tone control. From settings 1-9 it works like a standard tone then clicks in at 10 (full clockwise/ bright setting) and removes the pot and capacitor from the circuit. This eliminates the path to ground that exists with standard pots even in the full treble position. By eliminating the path to ground through the pot, the only load on the pickup is the volume pot. So, if 250K pots are used, the load is reduced from 125K to 250K and if 500K pots are used, the load is reduced from 250K to 500K (high resistance = low load) The reduced load allows more power output from the pickup and reduces the amount of high frequencies that bleed off to ground. This gives a noticeable increase in brightness and output in the full treble setting. The no load pot can be used in place of any standard tone control on any guitar or bass.

Does the number of control pots used affect the sound of a guitar?

Yes: Since the load on the pickups is determined by the total parallel resistance of all pots that are being used, using fewer pots will reduce the overall load and give a slightly brighter sound. Connecting more pots is the same as using lower value pots, two 500K pots will lose or "bleed" the same amount of treble frequencies as one 250K pot. To lessen the effect, switching should be designed (when possible ) to remove pots from the circuit when the related pickup is not selected. An example of this is the Les Paul: bridge controls are out of the circuit when in the selector is in the neck position and the neck controls are out of the circuit when the selector is in the bridge position.

Point 1:  4-axis alignment of the guitar neck

Each guitar neck is checked and adjusted to be sure it is true and straight to ensure proper alignment on all axis. This step ensures proper action and allows for more accurate and easier guitar tuning, playing and set-up in the following steps.

Point 2:   Inspect and lube the guitar tuning gears

Before installing the guitar tuning gears, each one is checked thoroughly. Each tuning gear is adjusted so that there is no play in the mechanism. They are then lubricated to insure smooth and even movement to make your guitar tune accurately.

Point 3:  Potting the guitar pickups

We dip the pickups in hot wax to reduce squeal and unwanted guitar feedback.

Point 4:  Prep the guitar body

Upon installing the guitar electronic components, great care is taken to ensure that all wires are properly routed, spaced, and grounded to ensure years of trouble free service with your guitar.

Point 5:   Level and polish the frets

This insures that all of the guitar frets are level, eliminating any possibility of fret buzz due to unevenness.

Point 6:  Radius the guitar strings

Most guitar necks have a contour over the top of the neck called the radius. We adjust the strings to make sure the height of each string follows the contour of the guitar neck radius.

Point 7:  Adjusting the overall guitar string height and the action

Once we set the contour and radius of the guitar strings, it’s time to adjust the overall height of the strings from the top of the frets to the bottom of the guitar strings.

Point 8:  Set the guitar intonation

This step is done twice. The intonation is set two times with a 24 hour "seat-in" period in between to allow the guitar to properly re-seat to the new adjustments.

Two Questions We Get A Lot Of In The Haywire Custom Shop..........

Q-Can you make a tele guitar sound as flexible as a strat?

A- Yes, we can make a guitar play however player wants it to play, feel, respond and sound. If they can verbalize the vision, action, timbre, features then we can do it.

2)-What Do Haywire Guitars Sound Like?

This is a question that comes up a lot. We are a custom guitar shop, and what that means is this: We will build you a guitar that combines all of your favorite elements of all your favorite guitars into one instrument. It will have the sound YOU like.

Action Speaks Louder Than Words

A guitar is only as beautiful as the last action.....setup that was really great. Guitar action is very important.
The guitar will sound like what you want it to sound like. You are the designer and we are the builder. There are differences in custom shops for costs as well as choices. For example;

The Difference Between Haywire Custom Guitars- Custom Shop and the Fender Custom Shop............   

We use everyone's parts-they only use theirs. If you consider the Fender custom shop for example, when deciding to have a new guitar built some things to bear in mind are:  Fender uses Fender parts. If you want EMG, Lollar, DiMarzio, Fralin, Bareknuckle, Nicholas Cardillo, Rio Grande, SRV pickups to name a few it most likely won't happen.
They have an agenda which includes using and promoting their own brand and understandably so. They are not going to add other companies products unless they are paid handsomely either by you or someone else but in reality they will most likely not do it. You won't necessarily get what you want. The prices in their  Custom shop are on average about 4 times higher than the most custom shops for about the same quality.
In our shop we do what you want, use the parts you request, add the pickups for the sound you need and add features that you'll love on a gig.  So....back to the original subject-What do Haywire guitars sound like?  Check the website when you can and look at the individual guitar product pages and you'll see some videos that demonstrate what Haywire guitars sound like with different pickups, features, push-pull options, pickup selections and more. The pickups we use are only limited by your imagination because we'll use whatever you like and make sensible realistic cost effective suggestions to assist your decisions about what pickups will do the job you need done. That is the big difference between us and the more expense less responsive guys.

Over at Haywire Custom Guitars they have been (among other things) marrying different guitars for quite some time now. The results of this matrimony have been striking to say the least, both visually and in the way they sound.
Rick Mariner – from Haywire Custom Guitars, is always talking to his customers, and that is exactly how this story begins. The Outcaster

The Haywire Signature Guitars - The Nashville Players #1
is a different animal – but it’s got a Classic bridge and bridge pickup installed. One difference right here is that the bridge is a six saddle bridge, which improves sustain over the 3 saddle types we’re used to seeing on similar guitars. Obviously, six saddles also provide you better control over your intonation.
Since this is a custom shop guitar – you have many more options as well. The Haywire Signature Guitars - The Nashville Players #1 can accommodate either a 25-1/2" or Gibson scale neck – which gives you more options on the overall feel as well as the headstock.
You have the choice of Alnico or Active EMG pickups as well.
This thing sounds really great, guys – we’ll show you some video of it in a minute.

The Outcaster offers even more options – and with the option for the tremolo bridge, it’s one step closer to the perfect marriage of two classic guitars.

A Custom Dream built for the Blues

Rick and Haywire Custom Guitars went WAY beyond my expectations for a custom guitar. The Bluescaster (A custom Fender American Standard with SRV pickups) jumped right off the Ebay page and screamed “LOOK AT ME!” I mean, how could I resist a wood-grain Fender built for the blues? That’s like walking down a beach full of topless Playmates without stopping to say “how you doin?” I contacted Rick and asked if he’d be willing to make some aesthetic changes to further “unique-ify” the guitar. Not only was he more than happy to oblige, but also made all of the alterations quickly and without any extra charge. He kept me up to date with constant pictures and emails through every step of the process. He treated me the way that every customer wants to be treated. Superb work, simply top drawer

I sent my Warmoth '59 Roundback in to Rick for him to modify. It was a little too large for my hands. After consulting with Rick we agreed that the best choice would be to modify the '59 Roundback to shape closer to a Warmoth/Peavey Wolgang contour.The turnaround was lightning speed. In a single day, Rick reshaped the neck, dressed the edges of the frets, resealed the neck, and reset the truss rod adjustments. All I had to do when I got back the neck was to screw in the 4 neck screws.I could not possibly be more pleased with the results. The neck is absolutely perfect for me, and I appreciate the expertise and professionalism courtesy this fine craftsman.Daryl Lazarescu, Winnipeg Canada

The Very Best

Mr. Rick Mariner built a Haywire 335 Strat for me and it's the very best guitar I have ever owned. I had two Gibsons,ES175 and the ES350 and this 335 Strat plays better. I've been playing for 62 years, this guitar is most outstanding.

I recently bought a used modified stratocaster from Haywire Custom Guitars.The only problem was that I couldn't see how it had been used.
It arrived looking factory fresh and it is stunning.
It has a sunburst gloss finish medium light alder body and a vintage maple '59 roundback neck. Rick Mariner is very precise in describing his guitars, but that does not prepare you for how beautifull his instruments sound, look and feel.
He is obviously passionate about his work, and wants his customers to be completely satisfied with their purchase.
Rick's attention to detail, with his guitars, his customers needs and communication is second to none.
That's why I bought another Haywire Custom Guitar just a few weeks after buying the first.
I strongly recommend Haywire Custom Guitars to anyone thinking of buying a guitar.

I received the guitar today and I have only one word to say...... INCREDIBLE!
This thing plays as good if not better than my Les Paul and sounds better too which is no surprise as it always had better tone than any of my guitars. Thanks for the attention to detail on the neck and the finish. I would honor being any kind of reference for you and I will certainly pass your name around for those who are in need of your services.

What a beautiful guitar. After unpacking it, I did a quick tune up and it was ready to go - the setup was perfect. Spent several hours playing it and basically just having fun with this excellent guitar. The Warmoth neck is fantastic.
I spent a lot of time researching Strats to find the right one for my collection, and now feel very lucky to have found Haywire Guitars and Rick Mariner. The finish on the body is stunning, and the workmanship on every part of the guitar is outstanding. Just as important for me is the customer service. I spent quite a bit of time talking to Rick via phone on two separate occasions, both about the guitar I was interested in and generally chatting about guitars. I felt as though we had been friends for years. He answered all of my questions and offered great information about guitar specifics. Would highly recommend Haywire Custom Guitars to anyone looking for the highest quality in a guitar - 100%.

Great experience with Haywire

Not too long ago, I bought a custom Tele from Haywire. It began as Haywire's "Tele Tremelo." I asked for several modifications, including a different pick-up and a different neck. I had a really excellent experience working with Rick Mariner, who is a really good communicator and a very reliable businessman. I would send him an e-mail, and he'd be back to me very quickly--with clear and complete answers about everything. The guitar is great--just what I was wanting. I recommend Haywire and Rick very highly.

Haywire 335 Strat

Mr. Rick Mariner built a guitar for me. He calls it The Haywire335 Strat.Well, it turns out to be the very best guitar I have ever owned. The Gibson ES350 and the ES175 I owned are very good guitars and this Haywire 335 Strat feels and plays better. I am amazed. Have played guitar for 62 years(10 of those years professionally) and this guitar is the most outstanding of them all. Thank you Rick Mariner.

Has your guitar become a little difficult to play sometimes?  Does it sound, "out of tune"?  Are the strings too high off the neck?  Is the neck warped or bowed?  Are the tuning gears difficult to turn?  Are moving parts rusty?  It could be that your guitar needs a tune up!

It's like getting it ready for the Grand Prix!  This is the same process that we perform on all of our new instruments, and it will put your “baby” back in shape, and allow you to play fast and in tune up and down the fret board like never before!

Bring your guitar back from the dead with a well-deserved tune up from Haywire Custom Guitars!  This includes cleaning the electronics,  the fret board,  tightening any loose hardware,  adding the proper washers to the input jack and tightening it to make sure it stays tight,  re-stringing, adjusting the truss rod, cleaning and adjusting nut slots,  set string height and intonation!  See our whole process below. 

Point 1:  4 - axis alignment of the guitar neck

Each guitar neck is checked and adjusted to be sure it is true and straight to ensure proper alignment on all axis. This step ensures proper action and allows for more accurate and easier guitar tuning, playing and set-up in the following steps.

Point 2:  Inspect and lube the guitar tuning gears

Before installing the guitar tuning gears, each one is checked thoroughly. Each tuning gear is adjusted so that there is no play in the mechanism. They are then lubricated to insure smooth and even movement to make your guitar tune accurately.

Point 3:  Potting the guitar pickups

We dip the pickups in hot wax to reduce squeal and unwanted guitar feedback.

Point 4:  Prep the guitar body

Upon installing the guitar electronic components, great care is taken to ensure that all wires are properly routed, spaced, and grounded to ensure years of trouble free service with your guitar.

Point 5:  Level and polish the frets

This insures that all of the guitar frets are level, eliminating any possibility of fret buzz due to unevenness.

Point 6:  Radius the guitar strings

Most guitar necks have a contour over the top of the neck called the radius. We adjust the strings to make sure the height of each string follows the contour of the guitar neck radius.

Point 7:  Adjusting the overall guitar string height and the action

Once we set the contour and radius of the guitar strings, it’s time to adjust the overall height of the strings from the top of the frets to the bottom of the guitar strings.

Point 8:  Set the guitar intonation

This step is done twice. The intonation is set two times with a 24 hour "seat-in" period in between to allow the guitar to properly re-seat to the new adjustments.
