The most important part of your guitar is its neck.  Because all guitar necks are subject to great stress as a result of string tension and seasonal change, there are times when a neck may take on a slight bow (or warp) or neck hump.  However, if it does, there is no cause for alarm we'll find it when we check for the straightness.

Therefore we avoid problems that create roadblocks to your success as a guitar player.  As they arrive in the shop, each guitar neck is checked and adjusted to be sure it is true and straight to ensure proper alignment on all axis. This step ensures proper action and allows for better and consistent string height and easier guitar tuning and playing. If a neck is bowed, then playing at the bowed area in the neck is always more difficult. The reason is that the strings are higher off the neck at the area of the bow. A player has to remember to slightly change his/her technique when playing around that spot. Rather than have to deal with that we make sure the neck is parallel to the strings and all action up and down the neck is the same. In that way, a player only has to think about the  music and not how hard to push down the strings in certain problem spots.  Finally, our inspections and fixes can help insure your success as a guitar player. Hi Usman,  Interesting question. Building a guitar is like raising a child.  Any parent knows that some children are easy to raise and some are especially difficult all the way through from beginning to end.  It is the exactly the same with putting a guitar together. And like children, they are all different. Some are easy from the beginning until the end, then there's the rest.  Seems like most of the time new builds are very predictable. Therefore, no problems are expected.  Because they're so much like children they can behave unusually.

Knowing how to handle each behavior that results from having a difficult child is important. Also, a difficult guitar needs to be dealt with properly. Dealing with guitars day in and day out gives builders a perspective that no one else can share.  So,....If I think something is wrong, I find out what and why.
Furthermore, like children and adolescents, guitars can have disorders that interfere with the way they feel, and act. As a result, we have to diagnose each and every problem that arises. A builder needs to keep building the guitar on track to be a great instrument he can be proud of.  And like children, behavior needs to be monitored constantly.

From the very beginning people have preferences about the way they like guitars and children to be. As we grow and learn, our preferences can expand and become more sophisticated. Maria asks:  What types of modifications can you do to a guitar, what effect do these modifications have on the quality of music that guitar produces?

 

Hello Maria,
Good question.  There are different reasons behind guitar comfort mods (or modifications).  Some are guitar "comfort" mods, for short, and they are designed to change the feel of the guitar when in contact with the players body. Yet still other modifications have nothing to do with sound at all. Women are built differently and require lighter guitars. Aging and older guitar players face comfort issues. We address those issues for older guitar players.

The comfort mods include, tummy cuts in the back of the guitar for better more ergonomic fit with the human body. Because the cut makes the guitar body fit the human body closer.  The feel is softer with comfort curves that feel more natural to us.  Other comfort issues include smaller and thinner guitar necks. In addition players with medical issues such as tendonitis, we work with them. Guitar neck shaving is done to slim down the neck for ease of play. Other comfort mods have to do with a guitar players hand size, and reach on the "heel crest area of the neck".

Still other guitar comfort mods include slimming down the general thickness of the neck, the width of the neck, radius or curvature of the top of the fret board,  height of the strings from the frets, the scale length of a neck, string gauge,  certain afflictions like arthritis, may have an effect on the location of the volume and tone controls.  This affects the feel of the distance of the strings from each other.  Areas as neck back contours can be very influential to a players comfort.  Because all of these mods help a player feel more comfortable.  And therefore they are more able to concentrate on the job of playing music.

There are the other modification that become necessary for improving the sound quality of the notes. These mods affect the quality of music the guitar produces. They include, but are not limited to:  excessive noise through a pickup,  muffle when rolling down the volume control, weakness in a pickup, uneven sound or volume from a pickup,  switching combinations not usually available except through custom wiring,  pole piece adjustment on Humbucker pickups, and adding tremolo devices for semi-tone wobbles creating dramatic effects.
