Neck thickness should be chosen for what best fits your hands, not the “tone” it has. Furthermore, that should be the major consideration in the choice of your new neck. The timbre of a fat neck is noticeable. However, most of the tone comes from your playing technique-not the wood.
On an electric guitar tones are affected by everything from the pickups and amplification to pedals, pickups to speaker enclosures.

Guitar Neck Shaving Is A Viable Option For Maximum Comfort

In a live playing situation “wood tones” in an electric guitar will become even less noticeable. Let’s say everything is equal and the guitar is perfectly in tune and intoned. The overall sound of your guitar may be noticeably affected by a fatter/ thicker neck but generally only when you are playing without the guitar plugged in to an amp. Most of all, high gain electric guitar tone is very much dependent on a players technique and comfort with his instrument and not the thickness of a neck. Therefore, guitar neck shaving is a viable option for comfort.
Neck tone is an issue that no empirical evidence has ever put to rest. However, comfort does affect your playing ability and technique which is what matters most in finding and maintaining your tone. Start with finding a neck that makes playing a joy and enhances your technique in a way that allows you to play your best, then:

However, other factors to consider are pickups, effects, speaker enclosures, etc.

The best way to communicate what you need is to either work with specs from your existing neck or send a neck along with the one you’d like shaved. Ideally the sample neck you send should be what you’d liked duplicated on the neck to be shaved. We can duplicate anything. If you want to work from your existing neck then move the strings and take thickness measurements with a digital caliper. We do this every time a neck comes in to the shop. Take the sample thicknesses from-1st fret 3rd 5th 7th 9th 12fth frets. From those measurements we’ll be able to determine how much you need removed to make it a better playing neck for you. Similarly, we use those thickness numbers to work from.

Haywire Guitar tune up-8 Point Gig-Ready Process

Point 1: 4-Axis Alignment of The Guitar Neck

First of all, each guitar neck is checked and adjusted to be sure it is true and straight to ensure proper alignment on all axis. This step ensures proper action and allows for more accurate and easier guitar tuning, playing and set-up in the following steps.

Point 2: Inspect and Lube The Guitar Tuning Gears

Before installing the guitar tuning gears, each one is checked thoroughly. Each tuning gear is adjusted so that there is no play in the mechanism. They are then lubricated to insure smooth and even movement to make your guitar tune accurately.

Point 3: Potting The Guitar Pickups

Because, we dip the pickups in hot wax to reduce squeal therefore, as a result, no unwanted guitar feedback.

Point 4: Prep The Guitar Body

Upon installing the guitar electronic components, while great care is taken to ensure that all wires are properly routed, spaced, and grounded. In addition, you’ll have many years of trouble free service with your guitar.

Point 5: Level and Polish The Frets

Most noteworthy, this insures that all of the guitar frets are level, eliminating any possibility of fret buzz due to unevenness.

Point 6: Radius The Guitar Strings

Since, most guitar necks have a contour over the top of the neck called the radius. We adjust the strings to make sure the height of each string follows the contour of the guitar neck radius.

Point 7: Adjusting The Overall Guitar String Height and The Action

Once we set the contour and radius of the guitar strings, it’s time to adjust the overall height of the strings from the top of the frets to the bottom of the guitar strings.

Point 8: Set The Guitar Intonation

This step is done twice. The intonation is set two times with a 24 hour “seat-in” period in between to allow the guitar to properly re-seat to the new adjustments.

Custom Guitar Shadow Build

Qt is a cross-platform application development framework for desktop, embedded and mobile. Supported Platforms include Linux, OS X, Windows, VxWorks, QNX, Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Sailfish OS and others.
Shadow building is a technique used to build different Qt builds of the same version for different platforms/compilers/etc. Shadow building means building a project in a separate directory, the build directory. This is the NEW definition of shadow building. That’s not what we’re talking about here. The original definition of shadow build comes from duplicate building techniques by craftsman over the years to arrive at a replica project.

Players don’t always like to take their best gear to a show so they ask us to do a shadow build of their favorite gigging guitar with a few changes.
Most shadow builds include a hotter more articulate pickup, lighter body and lighter hardware for more comfort playing all night long. And of course a great set-up with action and intonation set perfectly for that player…. that’s a custom guitar shadow build.

Vintage Guitar or Rip-Off?

A vintage guitar is an older instrument. By some accounts approximately 30 years or more in age. These guitars are bought up by collectors and players who believe they have more intrinsic value because of “wood tones”, “mojo” or by some other hidden secret they hold that can only be released when played. Collectors or musicians who persist with these ideas simply drive prices up. A Vintage guitar may indicate either that an instrument is merely old, or that is sought after for its tonal quality, cosmetic appearance, or historical significance. As far as tonal quality, all bets are off once the guitar is plugged in to an amp. Cosmetic appearance? Every vintage guitar makes its own story by the wear areas, scratches, grooves, player decorations and burn marks it has that make it look well played. Therefore, sometimes a player thinks he/she has more musical experience cred if they appear onstage playing an older instrument. Some players actually believe that because the instrument looks “aged” people will think they played it so much that it’s completely worn by their tremendous efforts and use. Experience doesn’t work that way. It’s someone else’s story written on the body and neck of the guitar-not yours.

Every vintage guitar makes its own story

Because of the perceived value of a “relic” or aged instrument naturally the cost goes up. Enter the “advantage takers”. To promote and gain a profit advantage over confused musicians, the “Road-Worn” series vintage guitars were born. So, now the idea is firmly planted in the heads of musicians that they will only seem credible or experienced if they have an older looking instrument. Do companies really believe that guitar players are that shallow? They say “yes” look at our profits. Players are buying these up faster than we can make them. Road worn guitars are now a cottage industry thanks to the aid of unsuspecting guitarists who subscribe to this idea.

What makes “vintage guitars” so special?

What makes “vintage guitars” so special? Nothing really. It’s the players who make the guitars special. Guitarists can take back their power from the guitar companies who want to see them merely as a sales prospect. Sure, I get that vintage gear, specifically guitars, are more expensive and sought-after. This is because the aged woods they are made from produce better musical tones. However this is an idea stolen (and mostly true) from the collectors of “acoustic” guitars. It does not apply to electric guitars. Companies have made money from musicians by confused and blurred lines between reasons for collecting acoustics vs. electrics.
Opportunistic vintage guitar sales companies treat guitar players like second class citizens who know nothing. Unfortunately the players are doing nothing to prove them wrong. Just look at the forums for guitar players and what they have to say. There is a Lemmings mentality and it’s hard to overcome the myths. More of our job in the Haywire Custom Shop involves “debunking” on a regular basis. We spend way too much time in the effort to expose claims, assertions and false sentiments as being pretentious, fake, or exaggerated. These are deliberately being propagated on guitar forums by misleading contributors possibly even working for the guitar companies.

Players need to think for themselves and not be taken in by what they read on these forums. Players should also enthusiastically resist what the guitar companies try and foist upon them in misleading advertising data. As a guitar player you spend a lot of time rehearsing and learning music, well learn how to think as well. Don’t blindly accept what others say in forums or from guitar sales companies. Why let them tell you what you should think? Make your own discoveries. Be yourself and not what companies want you to be. Think before you buy your guitar. Spend your guitar and customization dollars where they’ll do the most good for YOUR playing and comfort. Every guitar has a story written on it. Write your own guitar history instead of trying to buy someone else’s story.
