What Guitar Pickup Designs Are Best?

First you’ll need to understand what poles are and the relationship they play in a pickup design. Pickup poles are magnet posts that run perpendicular to the string windings in the guitar pickup’s coil to serve as a conductor for each string above it. Often you’ll notice one pole piece per string on a single coil is used. Some of today’s designs have one long bar pole piece, or blade, per string. Poles look like small metal circles under each string.

Flat poles are all the same height. The staggered poles have some poles reaching higher for certain strings and some are lower. They have a very non-uniform look. Flat-pole pickups simply give your guitar a better string balance. When the pole pieces are all level then your tone is more balanced. No volume on any string will dominate the others.

Fender Teles until sometime in 1956 had flat-poles. Leo Fender decided that since some of the strings were so far away from the guitar he needed to compensate and make some poles higher. In his mind, it would bring the volume out in the more distant poles for strings sitting higher. Now, moving guitar pickup poles closer to the strings does increase their output-only more windings will do that. However it will make the string louder.

Think about a pole as being a microphone for each string. Think about a singer. What happens as a singer gets farther away from the mic? The volume drops but the mic still has the same output. Placement is important!

High-output pickups are distorted and mostly unpleasant in the tonal spectrum. They generate distorted tones exactly as designed. The usage for these distortion producing pickups are limited at best. Low to mid-output pickups are more versatile and much quieter. They represent better and more clear, clean guitar output signal choices. They’re perfect for clean sounds, however you have the option of dirtying up your sound by changing your amp settings or plugging into distortion pedals. In the myriad of choices for amps you’ll find one that can easily distort at will. Most amps have enough gain to make any pickup generate heavy distortion levels. Picking a pickup just became easier.

I know lots of people who only wear “name brand” clothing. So do you? What if there was something else that fit better, looked and felt better? Would they wear it? From my experience- No. Well, the same goes for guitar pickups. If you’re just a name brand Lemmings kind of player there’s no changing you. However, if you’re intelligent, independent, not easily lead by the crowd and find your own path preferable, then you’ll benefit from a great set of pickups that just sound good. In the search for your perfect guitar you’ll go through a process.

Maybe you need a very custom guitar to inspire your guitar playing? The question then becomes-How Custom do you need it?

Sometimes when you have the right tool in your hand, as a result, guitar playing is easier. When your playing seems so much easier accordingly, your playing seems to improve. Why do you think that is? Could it be you want to spend more time with a guitar that’s just right for you? The more time spent with your guitar namely, playing it, the better you get. Right? Of course! And, above all, if it’s comfortable, reliable, sounds excellent, and plays great then you get inspired to go from one playing plateau to a higher one. Find your perfect guitar and play it! You can then answer the question about, your guitar playing.

One of my favorite guitar players and all around great guy, Greg Dalton, needed a very custom guitar. Therefore, we worked on it together to build in everything he’d need onstage at “Legends in Concert”. This was the result:
Our Haywire Custom Double Cutaway Modification Guitar Specs: Classic Body shape– extra light (3 lb. body) added plus hole re-routs sand and prep add gloss finish. Next we add Duncan Humbucker pickups, all chrome hardware, very custom 6 way wiring. Also included a Floyd Rose Tremolo. Furthermore, we applied satin lacquer to the neck and final sanded in 3000 grit pads after finish applied. We then installed the Haywire Custom Shop designed Warmoth Pro: 25-1/2” scale neck. It was a ‘59 round back profile plus large 6100 Stainless Steel frets. Because it was a wide neck, an R-5 locking nut and string bar for added sustain plus pro action setup.
We moved the front jack to the side and added a Neutrik locking style input for cable security. Then we had space on the top to place the football style custom built black cover. with coil tap switch installed for easy access to tap the coils on both pickups. Added also was a new black trem plate to match pick guard. So far a very custom guitar.
A coil tap switch activates and de-activates the “outside or inside poles” on the Humbuckers. The normal 5 way lever switch was not used but instead we chose a Gibson style pickup selector switch with a 3 way toggle for quiet “no noise” contact when selecting pickups during a performance.

The volume and tone controls are moved and located well out of the way. Finally a custom cut pick guard for better chord and hand access. Together the final assembly and setup. This Haywire Custom Guitars Signature Double Cutaway Guitars includes low action, great tone, light weight, easier access to controls. Also included: Haywire Treble Bleed circuit, recessed heel option for all access to back of the neck. Thea great tremolo, locking jack for reliability, stainless frets will be a great asset. This will provide years of wear and a happy guitar player. How Custom is that? Feel inspired?

Guitar setup price varies from region to region.
Take the time to get a good set up for your guitars. Of course, it depends on where you get the guitar set up. A good one will easily be worth the guitar setup price. If your guitar is poorly setup then the difference is night and day. Are your frets buzzing? we’ll fix that. Is your neck bowed? we’ll fix that. Is your bridge too high? we’ll fix that.

How important is it to get your guitar professionally set up?

Acoustic guitars are more delicate creatures and require more care and a seasoned professional luthier. Electrics need TLC also. In truth, a guitar professional has taken years working on those skills and has the proper tools. Is your acoustics’s nut or bridge too high? We’ll fix that. Oil the fret board, level the frets, re-crown the tops, straighten the neck, lube the tuners, add new strings, check for binding in the nut. It will all get done. Most importantly, having the guitar feel good for a customer should be the first priority. Your guitar will feel infinitely better when properly set up.

Understand Your Instrument

Establishing a relationship with your tech/luthier can go a long way. It will assure you’re getting the most out of your guitars. I recommend, at least get a setup done once so you can know what a good one is. It makes the guitar setup price worth every cent. Remember, it always costs twice as much to fix a botched repair than to fix the problem right the first time. As a result, it will make you a better guitarist. As well, you will understand your instrument and what is wrong when something feels off.
